Article by Theo Simon

While Britain’s green movement remains split over nuclear power, a determined band of campaigners are staging their own protests against a planned nuclear plant in the south-west. Activist Theo Simon gives an insider’s view.

Anti-nuclear activists claim victory over EDF Energy

Anti-nuclear groups today successful fought off a bit by EDF Energy to impose a blanket ban on demonstrations occurring on land earmarked for a new nuclear power plant in Somerset.

At the High Court this afternoon, EDF Energy failed in their bid to impose an injunction to stop an alliance of anti-nuclear groups from protesting on the 400-acre site set aside for two new mega-reactors at Hinkley Point.

EDF Energy attempts to shut down peaceful protest

The Stop New Nuclear alliance [1] has reacted with outrage at EDF Energy’s attempts to restrict peaceful protest against a proposed new nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset.

The French firm is seeking an injunction which would limit current and future protests at the controversial site, which has faced fierce local and national opposition. The move comes ahead of major demonstrations planned for 10-11th March, which Stop New Nuclear have said will still be going ahead.

All work on Hinkley Point C nuclear power station must be halted

Stop Hinkley campaigners are highlighting the significance of the report [1], ‘A Corruption of Governance?’ in relation to Électricité de France’s (EdF) new nuclear build project, Hinkley Point C, in Somerset.

No more Fukushimas - 10-11 March 2012: Blockade Hinkley Point

Surround and blockade Hinkley Point, Somerset

Hinkley Point is the first of eight proposed sites for nuclear new build to go ahead. We stopped them here before in 1987, and we can do it again in 2012. If they fail at Hinkley, it is unlikely the “nuclear renaissance” will have the momentum to continue.

On the 10th -11th March 2012, one year since the Fukushima nuclear disaster began, we will return to Hinkley to form a human chain around the station to show our determined opposition to new nuclear.
